Winter Maintenance Checklist for Lifting Equipment

As the colder months approach, lifting operations across construction, engineering and logistics face new challenges. Wet conditions, freezing temperatures and reduced visibility all increase the risk of accidents and downtime. That’s why winter is the ideal time to carry out routine safety checks, inspections and essential maintenance to ensure your equipment stays safe, reliable and compliant.

At LMT Hire Ltd, we’ve put together this essential winter maintenance checklist to help you stay prepared.

1. Book a LOLER Inspection

LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) is a legal requirement for all lifting equipment to undergo regular thorough examinations by a competent person. If your equipment is due for inspection , book it in before winter sets in.

Key Checks:

  • Chains, wire slings, hoists, chainblocks for wear or damage
  • Condition of shackles, eyebolts, lifting points, fibre slings
  • Certificates and Inspection History

2. Check for Rust and Corrosion

Cold, damp conditions can accelerate corrosion on lifting gear, especially if it’s stored or used outdoors. Inspect all metal components for signs of rust and treat affected areas to prevent failure.

Top Tip: Always store your equipment in a dry, sheltered area when not in use.

3. Test Before You Lift

Winter often brings reduced visibility and increased risk of handling errors. If you haven’t tested your equipment in a while, now’s the time to schedule a proof load test.

Why Proof Load Testing Matters:

  • Confirms your equipment can handle its rated load
  • Detects faults before they become safety hazards
  • Ensures compliance after repairs or modifications

4. Keep Test Weights Accessible

If you’re conducting regular load tests or preparing for new lifting operations, having the right test weights on hand is key.

We stock 500 tonnes of cast steel test weights for hire from 56lb hand weights to 7.4 Tonne block for hire including cradles and lifting slings, available for next-day delivery across the UK.
